Dear Trey,
You can pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Writing at OSU-Cascades for multiple reasons. It can be a passion project, a pathway to publishing or a professional writing career. Some creative writing students also go on to teach, including OSU-Cascades alumni Irene and Mike Cooper.
Irene, who teaches fiction and poetry, is the author of two books, “FOUND,” a psychological thriller, “Committal,” a speculative spy-fy novel, and “spare change,” a poetry collection. She says when she started in the MFA program, her goal was “to be part of the conversation. It is a thrill to meet and to be in conversation with other writers and with people (strangers!) who have read and gotten something out of your work.”
Mike, who teaches creative nonfiction, says it was always his intention “to teach and wear a tweed sport coat and smoke a pipe, but life got in the way.” In his 50s, he enrolled in the MFA program, where he “encountered many wonderful teachers who inspired me further,” he says. “I have to say that almost everything I teach has been stolen (recycled?) from my teachers, my reading and books, videos and classes on writing.” Mike was inspired to write by a high school teacher and has been writing throughout his life, and now he writes to inform his teaching.
Irene describes the MFA program as a “creative, curious, diverse and passionate community.” Apply now to join the conversation.
