The Master of Fine Arts Degree at OSU-Cascades Dear Trey,
Thank you for your interest in our Master of Fine Arts program! In OSU-Cascades' low-residency MFA in Writing program you will find the solidarity, intimacy and inspiration to show up and write bravely—wherever you are, however complex your "real life," whatever the storms you have to brave to get to the desk, stay at the desk and thrive at the desk. Our curriculum is engineered to fit the pace of your life, to nurture sustainable writing habits, to teach you the skills needed to sustain a creative livelihood after graduation, and to foster play, at least some of the time, outside your comfort zones.
The MFA in Writing at OSU-Cascades is a two-year, 49 credit program divided equally between intensive ten-day residencies and term-length academic courses and individual mentorships. OSU-Cascades runs on a quarter system, with residencies in the fall and spring quarters and 11-week courses in all four quarters of the academic year. Each residency, the program is visited by a Distinguished Writer to teach a special seminar and do a public reading. Distinguished Visiting Writers have included Kristen Millares Young, André Naffis-Sahely, and Rebecca Morgan Frank.
MFA students are admitted in a single, self-selected genre (Poetry, Creative Non-fiction, or Fiction) but have the opportunity to write and study across genre—and even to challenge the notion of genre itself. We work across disciplines and styles to find the most true, most meaningful, most nourishing ways to make art and support one another's art-making. There is an emphasis on hybrid- and cross-genre work (through common texts and assignments), mixed-genre seminars, and faculty and visiting artists who work and teach in multiple mediums.
